We are currently too dependent upon non-renewable energy sources such as coal and fossil fuel. While solar, wind, tidal energy etc. are excellent sources of energy, the cost of implementing and maintaining the equipment and infrastructure is too high. We have improved our medical knowledge drastically since the invention of simulation and health-protection machinery. CT Scan, MRI, X-rays etc. have made it easier for doctors to diagnose and treat various diseases. However, much still remains to be done. An ageing global population would need sustenance, something an engineer could think of a solution for.

Increasing urbanisation has put a lot of strain on cities globally. Less than 5% of the global population lived in cities a couple of centuries ago. The number has grown to over 50% today. Having too many people in a small geographical area puts too much strain on the land, leading to poor soil quality, water crisis and traffic congestion issues. Better designs for cities that solve these problems are the need of the hour. Civil engineering needs to be taken to new levels for cities to remain sustainable.
